My first solo record is called "Mosaic". I named it "Mosaic" because that's exactly what it was to bring this album together.
I had to learn a lot to produce a record like this all on my own. I wrote the songs.
I played and programmed the instruments, recorded them, mixed and mastered them.
I also like to see people as big mosaics with many different aspects.
After the projects I've done in the past, this record is my first step into instrumental music and shows me in a more melodic context.
The music also fills many parts of the mosaic of who I am.
And it's the beginning of a new era for me.
Here I will give you the opportunity to hear a preview of the songs
and get an insight into my thoughts about the songs and the gear I used.
Meanwhile the singles are available online and “Mosaic” will be released in early 2024.
Somewhere in Mexico (20th anniversary)
This is the song that started it all.
When I came home from a trip through Mexico in 2001, I was deeply influenced by the impressions of this journey.
One evening I heard this beautiful guitar loop in my head. The next morning "Somewhere in Mexico" was finished in a raw version.
I decided to record it completely new for this album. But the guitar loop is the original one that was recorded in that magical night in December 2001.
It was the absolute first instrumental recording I ever made. Every time I listen to it, I'm back in Mexico with my best friend Christian. It means absolute freedom for me.
After this recording I decided to build a recording studio and become an independent artist.
Now 20 years have passed, but "Somewhere in Mexico" still brings me freedom and joy.

Ghost Train
Wow, I'm completely thrilled by the fatness of this track.
This was the first song I ever wrote on a fretless guitar. Every guitar you hear is my "Surfreter".
The main rhythm guitar was played with a whammy pedal set to a fourth below.
Combined with the fretless sound this leads to that unorthodox headbanger.
The Lydian mode supports its mysterious vibe.
This song also has a deeper meaning for me.
The human ego is a crazy thing. In the days when I was writing Ghost Train, I began to look at the origin of creativity.
I realized that my creative side only works without the ego and that I have to turn off the ego so that my soul can come to the surface.
This happens naturally when we stop thinking. Making music is also a great way to achieve that.
Later I realized that only my soul is able to make me happy, while the ego is constantly fighting against something.
And it produces these massive thought trains in our head that we all know.
But it's not real. It's a self-made ghost.
Musically, I tried to capture the massive energy of that train with the rhythm part of the song,
while the melody part is the ego, which is the ghost that drives the train and tries to pull you in with sweet lies.
I think "Brain Train" would have been a good title for the song too.
Besides this spiritual meaning for me, I hope you enjoy "Ghost Train" for what it is.

What if ...?
This is the newest song on “Mosaic”.
Right from the beginning I wanted to have a song on the record that presents me in a reduced rock context.
And what can I say, I'm sorry I failed. But "What if ...?" has elements of that approach.
After the complex intro the song cleans up, and especially the solo part hits exactly what I was looking for.
When I composed the solo part, it was a very intense moment. I played myself into a kind of trance.
As the result this solo is very close to the core of who I am as a guitarist in many ways.
When I play it today it lifts me up and leaves me with a feeling of hope and the question: What if ...?
Fill in the blank.
I can't wait to play it with a band.

Indian Summer
"Indian Summer" is based on the slap guitar/autowha idea at the beginning of the song.
It was more of a sound vision than a song idea.
Back in the '90s, I started playing a lot with a whammy pedal on the guitar.
I developed a style that I think is different from guitarists like Tom Morello or Steve Vai.
I use it more like a wha-wha.
I always wanted to create a piece of music in which I could showcase my whammy vision.
Once I had the right images in my head to draw from, everything came together quickly.
I would definitely file it under rock, but it doesn't really fit into one single genre.
It also has elements of ambient, electro and jazz in it.
I would describe it as "vdZ meets drum n' bass".

I Will Be There
When my wife was pregnant with my son, I decided to write a piece of music in order to touch him emotionally before birth.
So I locked myself in the studio and listened really carefully to find the right notes.
"I Will Be There" is the result of that musical meditation I did.
My wife liked the idea and so she played the song with headphones on her baby bump.
When my son was born, the song really calmed him down every time he heard it.
"I Will Be There" I originally wrote and recorded on a fretted guitar.
But somehow I didn't get happy with the vibe of the performance, even though it worked out fine.
To me, something was missing. It just sounded too safe.
The song is a promise to my kids that no matter what happens and how difficult it gets, I will always be there for them.
Now, 15 years later, I am beginning to understand what that promise really means.
So I decided to play the song on my fretless guitar to see what would happen to it.
And what can I say, it was and is the biggest challenge I have ever taken on a guitar.
Some parts of the song are an adventure every time.
But it is exactly these uncertainties that now make "I Will Be There" just right for me.
The fragility of the performance perfectly underlines the meaning of the song and creates a beautiful aura.

Composing for me is like letting the creative power of the universe shine through you.
When I am inspired to write music, I always feel as if the idea came from somewhere, but not from me.
I'm more of a transmitter for the creative impulse.
When my wife was pregnant with my kids, I decided to write a piece of music in order to touch them emotionally before birth.
So I locked myself in the studio and listened really carefully to find the right notes.
"I Will Be There" came out for my son and "My Heart Beats For You" for my daughter.
My wife liked the idea and so she played the songs with headphones on her baby bump.
It's like magic, but on some level both songs, although they are completely different,
really fit perfectly to each of them, wherever they may come from.
I remember being a bit irritated by "My Heart Beats For You" when the idea came to me,
because the song is so upbeat and doesn't have the vibe you would probably expect for playing it to an unborn child.
But it was exactly what came out of me at that moment.
My heart was really dancing.
It's a great snapshot and I'm very happy that I captured it.

Fretless Nightmares
What a beast!
Maybe the craziest song I've ever recorded.
Definitely comes from the area of my mind that will always be "Colours of Perception".
Not only, but especially recommended for the adventurous metalhead.
When I wrote it, I was imagining different aspects of nightmares.
So I experimented with weird noises and created a slightly dissonant riffing on my "Surfreter" fretless guitar.
But I didn't want to create an atonal and purely aggressive piece, so in the end everything resolves and turns into a happy ending.
The song really pushes some boundaries for me and creates a truly intensive atmosphere.
But even though this is a very serious recording, please take it with a sense of humor.
Or as Bill and Ted would say:

Sparkling Daylight
I recorded this song as a wake-up song for my wife Nicole. She always wanted to have a CD watch to wake up slowly with beautiful music.
So I decided to buy her one as a birthday present.
To add some spice to the gift, I sat down in the studio to record a really sweet song that would give her a very relaxed awakening.
I went through my archives and found a nice piano idea I had a while ago. When I heard it, everything became clear.
I built the song from this piano and added everything sound by sound until I had created this beautiful atmosphere. I remember the moment it was finished well.
It was late at night and the music had really uplifted me. So I decided to take my beloved Framus and overdub one improvisational guitar to hear how it works.
And what can I say. It completely blew me away. What a magical moment. A few days later I added some second guitar madness at the end of the song.
But the main melody completely captures my emotions from that magical night.
When Nicole heard it on her birthday, she smiled ...

When I recorded "Somewhere in Mexico" as my first instrumental piece in 2001, I decided to become an independent artist and build a recording studio where I could realize my visions.
Some years later I discovered the above words of Rilke and realized that this, at least for me, is the answer to all questions (and not 42). And it became my "mantra", so to speak, that kept me going.
At that time, I wasn't very far away from releasing a solo record. But it was not the right time. It was all before I became father of two children.
When my kids were small, we were doing "Neuland" on a fairly low level, and I am grateful to my band mates that I had at least some musical interaction during that period.
But I never gave up the idea of being a solo artist who releases records on his own.
As my kids grew up, I got to the point where I knew I had to do it "now" or let it go.
I decided to put "Mosaic" together, create a website and try to bring more visions to life.
I have written a lot of music over the years, which I now want to publish step by step. And the count is growing.
But I don't want to do it alone, like I did with "Mosaic".
When I look back at the bands I've worked with and the studio work I've done in the past, it's obvious that my music is diverse.
Under the label "vdZ" I plan to get across the limitations of the classical band concept and
be able to offer other musicians an open-minded atmosphere to leave their fingerprint in the music I compose.
I am very excited about the musical collaborations that will unfold during this ongoing process.

Neuland
(2003 - 2006 & 2010 – 2019)
After all those freaky and heavy years in the 90ies "Neuland" was founded in 2003 to focus more on the melodic and composing side of music and with the hope to reach a wider audience.
It was the second band I did with Stefan "Bürste" Hörsting on bass and the first with Sascha Theunissen on vocals, guitar and keys and Alex Barthelmie on drums (later Gordian Peters on drums).
Guitar-wise my goal was to include some classical approach to the more adventurous style I developed with "Colours of Perception".
What "Neuland" turned out to be was a modern and american sounding, German singing rock band with a very broad range and a touch of progressive music.
Unfortulately we had to give up "Neuland" in 2019. With "Neuland" I recorded a studio promo CD in 2004 and a live CD in the "Tiegel" in 2005.
Colours of Perception
(1994 - 2005)
I was a founding member of the crossover band "Colours of Perception" in 1994. This band was my first serious attempt to write own music.
I really made a lot of important experiences with this band: writing, performing, recording and ego balancing.
We had a strong learning curve and soon became the first band in town when it came to musical playfulness.
With "Colours of Perception“ we always tried to push our limits and mix different styles, without loosing musical focus - and sometimes we did.
"Colours of Perception“ did some recordings through the years and released a "Greatest Hits" record that I produced in the "Tiegel" in 2005.
Mudguard
(Member 1998 - 2001)
After a magical week in Nottingham with "Colours of Perception" and the music scene of our hometown in 1998,
it happened that I unintentionally became the fifth member of the hardcore crossover band "Mudguard", founded by some friends in 1992.
I really enjoyed my role in this band because I was far from being the leader of this formation.
I only did what I was supposed to do: playing guitar as best I could.
So it was really a lot of fun to play gigs with this band. And we did it extensively.
In 2000 we recorded the album "Urban scenes on the edge of reality".

Ferner berücksichtigen wir den Schutz personenbezogener Daten bereits bei der Entwicklung bzw. Im Rahmen unserer Verarbeitung von personenbezogenen Daten kommt es vor, dass die Daten an andere Stellen, Unternehmen, rechtlich selbstständige Organisationseinheiten oder Personen übermittelt oder sie ihnen gegenüber offengelegt werden. Vorbehaltlich ausdrücklicher Einwilligung oder vertraglich oder gesetzlich erforderlicher Übermittlung verarbeiten oder lassen wir die Daten nur in Drittländern mit einem anerkannten Datenschutzniveau, vertraglichen Verpflichtung durch sogenannte Standardschutzklauseln der EU-Kommission, beim Vorliegen von Zertifizierungen oder verbindlicher internen Datenschutzvorschriften verarbeiten (Art. 44 bis 49 DSGVO, Informationsseite der EU-Kommission: https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/law-topic/data-protection/international-dimension-data-protection_de).
Die von uns verarbeiteten Daten werden nach Maßgabe der gesetzlichen Vorgaben gelöscht, sobald deren zur Verarbeitung erlaubten Einwilligungen widerrufen werden oder sonstige Erlaubnisse entfallen (z.B. wenn der Zweck der Verarbeitung dieser Daten entfallen ist oder sie für den Zweck nicht erforderlich sind).
Sofern die Daten nicht gelöscht werden, weil sie für andere und gesetzlich zulässige Zwecke erforderlich sind, wird deren Verarbeitung auf diese Zwecke beschränkt. D.h., die Daten werden gesperrt und nicht für andere Zwecke verarbeitet. Das gilt z.B. für Daten, die aus handels- oder steuerrechtlichen Gründen aufbewahrt werden müssen oder deren Speicherung zur Geltendmachung, Ausübung oder Verteidigung von Rechtsansprüchen oder zum Schutz der Rechte einer anderen natürlichen oder juristischen Person erforderlich ist.
Unsere Datenschutzhinweise können ferner weitere Angaben zu der Aufbewahrung und Löschung von Daten beinhalten, die für die jeweiligen Verarbeitungen vorrangig gelten.
Cookies sind Textdateien, die Daten von besuchten Websites oder Domains enthalten und von einem Browser auf dem Computer des Benutzers gespeichert werden. Ein Cookie dient in erster Linie dazu, die Informationen über einen Benutzer während oder nach seinem Besuch innerhalb eines Onlineangebotes zu speichern. Um unser Onlineangebot sicher und effizient bereitstellen zu können, nehmen wir die Leistungen von einem oder mehreren Webhosting-Anbietern in Anspruch, von deren Servern (bzw. von ihnen verwalteten Servern) das Onlineangebot abgerufen werden kann. Zu diesen Zwecken können wir Infrastruktur- und Plattformdienstleistungen, Rechenkapazität, Speicherplatz und Datenbankdienste sowie Sicherheitsleistungen und technische Wartungsleistungen in Anspruch nehmen.
Zu den im Rahmen der Bereitstellung des Hostingangebotes verarbeiteten Daten können alle die Nutzer unseres Onlineangebotes betreffenden Angaben gehören, die im Rahmen der Nutzung und der Kommunikation anfallen. Zu den Serverlogfiles können die Adresse und Name der abgerufenen Webseiten und Dateien, Datum und Uhrzeit des Abrufs, übertragene Datenmengen, Meldung über erfolgreichen Abruf, Browsertyp nebst Version, das Betriebssystem des Nutzers, Referrer URL (die zuvor besuchte Seite) und im Regelfall IP-Adressen und der anfragende Provider gehören.
Die Serverlogfiles können zum einen zu Zwecken der Sicherheit eingesetzt werden, z.B., um eine Überlastung der Server zu vermeiden (insbesondere im Fall von missbräuchlichen Angriffen, sogenannten DDoS-Attacken) und zum anderen, um die Auslastung der Server und ihre Stabilität sicherzustellen.

Bei der Kontaktaufnahme mit uns (z.B. per Kontaktformular, E-Mail, Telefon oder via soziale Medien) sowie im Rahmen bestehender Nutzer- und Geschäftsbeziehungen werden die Angaben der anfragenden Personen verarbeitet soweit dies zur Beantwortung der Kontaktanfragen und etwaiger angefragter Maßnahmen erforderlich ist.

Wir unterhalten Onlinepräsenzen innerhalb sozialer Netzwerke und verarbeiten in diesem Rahmen Daten der Nutzer, um mit den dort aktiven Nutzern zu kommunizieren oder um Informationen über uns anzubieten.
Wir weisen darauf hin, dass dabei Daten der Nutzer außerhalb des Raumes der Europäischen Union verarbeitet werden können. Hierdurch können sich für die Nutzer Risiken ergeben, weil so z.B. die Durchsetzung der Rechte der Nutzer erschwert werden könnte.
Ferner werden die Daten der Nutzer innerhalb sozialer Netzwerke im Regelfall für Marktforschungs- und Werbezwecke verarbeitet. So können z.B. anhand des Nutzungsverhaltens und sich daraus ergebender Interessen der Nutzer Nutzungsprofile erstellt werden. Die Nutzungsprofile können wiederum verwendet werden, um z.B. Zu diesen Zwecken werden im Regelfall Cookies auf den Rechnern der Nutzer gespeichert, in denen das Nutzungsverhalten und die Interessen der Nutzer gespeichert werden. Ferner können in den Nutzungsprofilen auch Daten unabhängig der von den Nutzern verwendeten Geräte gespeichert werden (insbesondere, wenn die Nutzer Mitglieder der jeweiligen Plattformen sind und bei diesen eingeloggt sind).
Für eine detaillierte Darstellung der jeweiligen Verarbeitungsformen und der Widerspruchsmöglichkeiten (Opt-Out) verweisen wir auf die Datenschutzerklärungen und Angaben der Betreiber der jeweiligen Netzwerke.
Auch im Fall von Auskunftsanfragen und der Geltendmachung von Betroffenenrechten weisen wir darauf hin, dass diese am effektivsten bei den Anbietern geltend gemacht werden können. Nur die Anbieter haben jeweils Zugriff auf die Daten der Nutzer und können direkt entsprechende Maßnahmen ergreifen und Auskünfte geben. Sollten Sie dennoch Hilfe benötigen, dann können Sie sich an uns wenden.
Facebook-Seiten: Wir sind gemeinsam mit Facebook Irland Ltd. für die Erhebung (jedoch nicht die weitere Verarbeitung) von Daten der Besucher unserer Facebook-Seite (sog. "Fanpage") verantwortlich. Zu diesen Daten gehören Informationen zu den Arten von Inhalten, die Nutzer sich ansehen oder mit denen sie interagieren, oder die von ihnen vorgenommenen Handlungen (siehe unter „Von dir und anderen getätigte und bereitgestellte Dinge“ in der Facebook-Datenrichtlinie: Facebook-Datenrichtlinie), sowie Informationen über die von den Nutzern genutzten Geräte (z. Wir binden in unser Onlineangebot Funktions- und Inhaltselemente ein, die von den Servern ihrer jeweiligen Anbieter (nachfolgend bezeichnet als "Drittanbieter”) bezogen werden. Dabei kann es sich zum Beispiel um Grafiken, Videos oder Stadtpläne handeln (nachfolgend einheitlich bezeichnet als "Inhalte”).
Die Einbindung setzt immer voraus, dass die Drittanbieter dieser Inhalte die IP-Adresse der Nutzer verarbeiten, da sie ohne die IP-Adresse die Inhalte nicht an deren Browser senden könnten. Die IP-Adresse ist damit für die Darstellung dieser Inhalte oder Funktionen erforderlich. Wir bemühen uns, nur solche Inhalte zu verwenden, deren jeweilige Anbieter die IP-Adresse lediglich zur Auslieferung der Inhalte verwenden. Drittanbieter können ferner sogenannte Pixel-Tags (unsichtbare Grafiken, auch als "Web Beacons" bezeichnet) für statistische oder Marketingzwecke verwenden. Durch die "Pixel-Tags" können Informationen, wie der Besucherverkehr auf den Seiten dieser Webseite, ausgewertet werden. Die pseudonymen Informationen können ferner in Cookies auf dem Gerät der Nutzer gespeichert werden und unter anderem technische Informationen zum Browser und zum Betriebssystem, zu verweisenden Webseiten, zur Besuchszeit sowie weitere Angaben zur Nutzung unseres Onlineangebotes enthalten als auch mit solchen Informationen aus anderen Quellen verbunden werden.

Below you will find an overview of the legal basis of the DSGVO, on the basis of which we process personal data. Please note that in addition to the provisions of the DSGVO, national data protection regulations may apply in your or our country of residence or domicile. Consent (Art. 6 para. 1 p. 1 lit. a. DSGVO) - The data subject has given his/her consent to the processing of personal data relating to him/her for a specific purpose or purposes.
Contract performance and pre-contractual enquiries (Art. 6 para. 1 p. 1 lit. b. DSGVO) - Processing is necessary for the performance of a contract to which the data subject is party or for the performance of pre-contractual measures taken at the data subject's request.
Legitimate interests (Art. 6 para. 1 p. 1 lit. f. DSGVO) - Processing is necessary to protect the legitimate interests of the controller or a third party, unless such interests are overridden by the interests or fundamental rights and freedoms of the data subject which require the protection of personal data.
National data protection regulations in Germany: In addition to the data protection regulations of the General Data Protection Regulation, national regulations on data protection apply in Germany. These include, in particular, the Act on Protection against Misuse of Personal Data in Data Processing (Federal Data Protection Act - BDSG). In particular, the BDSG contains special regulations on the right to information, the right to erasure, the right to object, the processing of special categories of personal data, the processing for other purposes and the transmission and automated decision-making in individual cases, including profiling. Furthermore, it regulates data processing for purposes of the employment relationship (Section 26 BDSG), in particular with regard to the establishment, implementation or termination of employment relationships as well as the consent of employees. Furthermore, data protection laws of the individual federal states may apply.
We take appropriate technical and organisational measures to ensure a level of protection appropriate to the risk in accordance with the legal requirements, taking into account the state of the art, the implementation costs and the nature, scope, circumstances and purposes of the processing as well as the different probabilities of occurrence and the extent of the threat to the rights and freedoms of natural persons.
The measures include, in particular, ensuring the confidentiality, integrity and availability of data by controlling physical and electronic access to the data as well as the access, entry, disclosure, assurance of availability and segregation of the data. We also have procedures in place to ensure the exercise of data subjects' rights, the deletion of data and responses to data compromise. Furthermore, we already take the protection of personal data into account in the development or selection of hardware, software and procedures in accordance with the principle of data protection, through technology design and through data protection-friendly default settings.
In the course of our processing of personal data, the data may be transferred to or disclosed to other bodies, companies, legally independent organisational units or persons. The recipients of this data may include, for example, service providers commissioned with IT tasks or providers of services and content that are integrated into a website. In such cases, we observe the legal requirements and, in particular, conclude corresponding contracts or agreements that serve to protect your data with the recipients of your data.
If we process data in a third-party country (i.e. outside the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA)) or the processing takes place in the context of the use of third-party services or the disclosure or transfer of data to other persons, bodies or companies, this will only be done in accordance with the legal requirements.

The data processed by us will be deleted in accordance with the legal requirements as soon as their consents permitted for processing are revoked or other permissions cease to apply (e.g. if the purpose of processing this data has ceased to apply or it is not required for the purpose).
If the data are not deleted because they are required for other and legally permissible purposes, their processing is limited to these purposes. I.e. the data is blocked and not processed for other purposes. This applies, for example, to data that must be retained for reasons of commercial or tax law or whose storage is necessary for the assertion, exercise or defence of legal claims or for the protection of the rights of another natural or legal person.
Our privacy notices may also contain further information on the retention and deletion of data, which will take precedence for the respective processing operations.
Cookies are text files that contain data from visited websites or domains and are stored by a browser on the user's computer. A cookie is primarily used to store information about a user during or after their visit within an online offering. In order to provide our online offer securely and efficiently, we use the services of one or more web hosting providers from whose servers (or servers managed by them) the online offer can be accessed. The data processed as part of the provision of the hosting offer may include all information relating to the users of our online offer that is generated as part of the use and communication. Collection of access data and log files: We ourselves (or our web hosting provider) collect data on every access to the server (so-called server log files). We maintain online presences within social networks and process user data in this context in order to communicate with users active there or to offer information about us.
We would like to point out that user data may be processed outside the European Union. This may result in risks for the users because, for example, the enforcement of the users' rights could be made more difficult.
Furthermore, user data within social networks is usually processed for market research and advertising purposes. For example, usage profiles can be created based on the usage behaviour and resulting interests of the users. The usage profiles can in turn be used, for example, to place advertisements within and outside the networks that presumably correspond to the interests of the users.
